A film of the early years of the reign of Elizabeth I of England and her difficult task of learning what is necessary to be a monarch.
Director: Shekhar Kapur
Writer: Michael Hirst
Stars: Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush and Christopher Eccleston
SPOILER ALERT…..Cate Blanchett is my favorite actor to play Elizabeth. This film begins when Princess Elizabeth is in her late teens and slightly before she becomes Queen Elizabeth. From the very beginning Elizabeth is embroiled in intrigue. Her half sister is Queen Mary (Bloody Mary) named so because of her bloody scourge of Protestants throughout her realm. Elizabeth is a protestant and she is arrested and put in the tower, accused of a conspiracy against Queen Mary (a Catholic). Elizabeth’s life was in real danger. The Privy Counsel argued long and hard for the death of Elizabeth, her cousin (The Duke of Norfolk) tried to convince Mary to execute Elizabeth. But for some reason Mary would not. (it helps to know some of the history between Mary and Elizabeth) Mary helped in the care of Elizabeth when she was a infant, she was one of Elizabeth’s Ladies-in-Waiting, even though each was a Princess. Over the years while Elizabeth was growing up the two half sisters spent time together and attended many Royal functions together.5*****STAR MOV
Elizabeth the film, stirred my interest in the history of Elizabeth the historical character. I wanted to know how did she survive and become The Queen of England. The question was: How did Elizabeth survive from 1536−1558, (The Death of her Mother 1536 until she became The Queen in 1558). Elizabeth was a Protestant, her half sister Mary was a Catholic, Mary had imprisoned Elizabeth for nearly a year and and threatened her with beheading. How did Elizabeth escape that and live to become The Queen? I have heard people say that the film was not historically correct, but it was correct enough for me to understand the Elizabeth was in a tough spot and that her life was in danger from the moment that her mother was beheaded. I watch the TV SERIES “THE TUDORS” which gave many answers to my questions, it showed the history between the sisters, it showed how Mary was made A Lady in Waiting for her baby half sister Elizabeth. A complicated relationship indeed, Mary had helped to raise Elizabeth, so when it came time to sign the Death Warrant, Mary could not bring herself to do it, she could not execute her half-sister. The Movie Elizabeth is an excellent character study of the Queen, I highly recommend it. I give this film 5/5*****STARS
